What is an adult?
Very few classify it as what they do now such as having a job, buying a home, getting married, or having a child as a sign of adulthood. An adult is a person who accepts responsibility, makes independent decisions, and becomes financially independent.
Studies around the world have shown that many adolescents/early adults don't really consider themselves adults yet but they say they're "in between" the two stages. They classified this as a stage called "Emerging Adulthood". Some scholars believe that there is no stage called "Emerging Adulthood" but that this is just a part of late adolescence stalling off adulthood. They believe there is a psychological component to becoming an adult but won't classify that time as a stage.
A lot of the time being classified as an adult is carried by the policies and laws that come with increasing age. such as juvenile or adult court, pediatric care or a GP, or car insurance based on age.
When so called adult children or "Emerging Adults" meet up with their families for holidays or such and have talks about responsibility, control, independence, or adult decisions, the parents try to field where there kid is and help them in any way they can to move on into adulthood.
I believe there is a stage called "Emerging Adulthood" and a lot of people are wrapped in that stage right now. It's very difficult to make the necessary psychological steps to become and adult. Being independent and making smart decisions that will benefit yourself will aid you in making the correct psychological steps into becoming an adult.
