In recent years gender roles in society have been less strict and more lenient for both men and women. Compared to what they used to be, they have changed a lot. Gender roles used to be clearly defined with what men and women should do but now it is acceptable for a woman to be a high ranked business woman over a man. This is one of the many examples of gender roles changing throughout the years.
It is clearly harder to be a boy in today's society for the fact they have to do "manly jobs" and always act like a big strong man. This restricts them opportunities like teaching preschoolers or going into nursing because they are scared of the possibility of getting made fun of for not being masculine enough. In the article, 'Men are stuck' in gender roles, data suggests, Barbara Rissman states that "if girls call themselves tomboys, it is with a sense of pride" but boys get made fun of it "if they step just a little outside the rigid masculine stereotype". This makes it hard for boys to understand there 'role' in society, especially at a young age. A lot of boys have to watch what they do/want to do with the fear of being made fun of for it.
--"If a little girl is running around on the baseball team with her mitt, people think, 'That's a strong girl'"--
--"When my 6-year-old is running around in a dress, people think there's something wrong with him."--
While men have shied away from doing certain things, women have been ambitious and taken initiative to do what they really want. By doing so, women have created new job opportunities in the workforce for themselves. Another downfall for the men. The women take the guy's jobs. This results in men being unemployed and them having to stay home and take care of their children, if they have any. Even though some men would like to be the primary caregiver for their children, they would never want to admit it. No man wants to call themselves compassionate and caring. A balance is needed between men and women.
I don't feel like its different being a man or woman in today's society. Men and women alike both have their struggles everyday. Women one day and men the next will have rough times in the world. People should be able to do what they want without the worry of what others will think. Acceptance is needed throughout the world even if something is a little outside the norm.
